After an East Greek prototype, Chios, ca. 580–570 BC

This Chian chalice is based on a rare East Greek vessel from the island of Chios, dating to the early 6th century BC and preserved in the Musée du Louvre. The original piece is attributed to the Running Man Painter, a key representative of the Chian Chalice tradition.

The chalice is distinguished by its white-ground slip, characteristic of Chian pottery. The interior is decorated with lotus flowers and buds, while the exterior of the bowl depicts a lion shown on both sides, rendered in outline and enriched with added color.

Chian chalices are valued for their polychrome decoration and refined form, reflecting the distinctive artistic identity of East Greek workshops in the early Archaic period.
