Black & Red Figure Kylix with Ships and Dolphins
from THETIS cabinet (one-of-a-kind)
A reproduction inspired by an ancient Attic black-figure kylix in the British Museum. The interior medallion depicts a young man bending forward to lift a large transport amphora, while around the rim a lively maritime frieze shows ancient galleys sailing across stylised waves, accompanied by dolphins. Ancient prototype: British Museum, 1843,1103.29, Attic black-figure kylix.
The unusually expansive decoration makes imaginative use of the broad interior of the kylix, combining a scene associated with wine and the symposium at its centre with the movement of ships and dolphins around the bowl. The shallow profile, elegant handles and raised foot preserve the characteristic proportions of the ancient Greek drinking cup. Made in 2014-2015.
