Black-Glazed Kantharos with Acrobat and Dionysos, ca. 510–500 BCE
Black-glazed kantharos decorated in Six’s Technique, inspired by a fragmentary Attic skyphos in the J. Paul Getty Museum, attributed near the Theseus Painter and to the Heron Class.
On one side, an acrobatic drinker balances on one hand and one foot while drinking from a white-painted cup, a playful and provocative image from the world of the symposium. On the reverse, Dionysos is rendered in the same style.
Six’s Technique briefly flourished in late sixth-century Athens, with figures painted in added red, orange or white over a black-glazed surface, sometimes with incised details.
