The Brand

Who we are

ATTIC BLACK is the retail brand of THETIS Authentics, an Athens-based workshop devoted to researching, reviving, and practicing ancient Greek ceramic technology. The studio grew from THETIS’ materials-science work (est. 1999) and launched the ATTIC BLACK brand in 2012 to bring that research to the public through functional and collectible ceramics.

What we stand for : the ceramics

We make ceramics the ancient way, with modern rigor. Every piece is hand-thrown or hand-modelled. Painted with clay-based slips, the colours emerge in the firing so no acrylics or synthetic glazes are needed. It’s the classic Attic approach, rebuilt through years of lab work and kiln testing.

Our black-gloss surfaces come from the historic oxidizing - reducing - re-oxidizing (“three-phase”) firing that seals the slip into a deep, durable sheen. Beauty that’s born in the fire, not painted on after.

Because we control materials and process, our wares are free of toxic elements and stand up to everyday use; resistant to common liquids and heat so they’re as practical as they are faithful to tradition.

Decades of comparative study mean our pieces match ancient originals in style, colour, texture, even chemical composition and micro-structure. Bringing museum-grade know-how to the table.

One of a kind and small series

Alongside our core lines, we produce one of a kind pieces and short series. We also create reconstructions and teaching sets for learning and display.

Most sold out pieces can be produced to order. Please get in touch through the contact form and we will advise on timing and availability.

Keeping the kiln turning

Ancient techniques are not only our past. They are the future care of an art form and a skill that has existed since at least the seventh century BCE. When we preserve recipes, clay preparation, slips, and firing know how, we keep a living chain of knowledge intact for the next maker.

Craft survives through practice and sharing. We document what we do, train new hands at the wheel, and invite visitors to see the process up close. Beyond making, we teach: our studio offers free guided visits, short thematic classes, and intensive hands on workshops that pass skills forward, connecting contemporary makers with time tested techniques.
