Mildenberg Fish Plate – Taras, 4th Century BC
A 4th-century BC South Italian Greek fish plate, most probably from Taras (Taranto), faithfully reproduced after an ancient original from the Leo Mildenberg Collection. A single, bream-like fish is painted in pale tones against a deep black ground—an elegant, graphic image that emphasizes pure form and pattern. This “one-fish” composition is relatively uncommon among fish plates (which more often show two or three sea creatures), giving the piece a striking clarity and a distinctly Tarentine, Magna Graecia character.
