Red-Figure Kylix – Peleus and Thetis
Elegant Attic-style red-figure kylix with a broad shallow bowl, delicate horizontal handles and a low pedestal foot. The interior medallion depicts Peleus seizing the sea-goddess Thetis, who attempts to escape him through her powers of transformation, symbolised by the serpents and lion surrounding the figures. The finely drawn composition is inspired by Late Archaic and Early Classical representations of the myth, including the celebrated red-figure kylix in the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich (Inv. 2648), ca. 480–470 BCE.
