High-Quality Reproduction Fish Plate

This fish plate is based on an original housed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Created in the early fourth century B.C., these plates were popular in Greece and southern Italy, particularly Campania. This example features marine life, including an octopus, a bream, and a striped perch, with their bellies oriented toward the center, unlike Athenian designs.

The plate is adorned with a band of black dots and an ivy vine around the rim. The artist’s careful detailing and use of dilute glaze, especially to define the octopus' arms, captures the shimmering effect of marine life in water. This craftsmanship reflects a deep familiarity with the sea life that played a central role in the Campanian diet.

Both functional and decorative, this plate brings the artistry of the ancient Mediterranean into your home.
