Red-Figure large Kylix with Youth

from THETIS Cabinet

Attic-style red-figure kylix, based on the shape of an ancient cup in the Harvard Art Museums, ascribed to the Pioneer Group and dated ca. 510–500 BCE.

The interior medallion shows a nude youth moving swiftly forward, holding a staff with his himation draped over it, while carrying a small askos behind his back.

The kylix was one of the principal drinking vessels of the Greek symposium, its painted medallion gradually revealed as the wine was consumed.

Large vessels of this type may develop a fine crack near the centre during drying. Although repaired before decoration, such cracks can occasionally reappear during firing. This vase bears a professional restoration within the medallion, hardly visible today. Similar imperfections are also found on ancient ceramics and add to the individuality and character of the piece.

A minimal and collectible object, made in May 2013 and kept in the THETIS collection ever since.
