Black-Figure Lekythos with Two Boxers and Judges, Late 6th century BC

A slender and elegant lekythos, a vessel used in antiquity to hold precious oil and associated with both daily life and ritual practice.

This example reproduces a scene from a similar black-figure lekythos formerly sold at Bonhams. Two boxers are shown in combat, supervised by two judges, each draped in a red himation. The shoulder is decorated with a palmette and two further draped figures.

This faithful ATTIC BLACK reproduction was created as part of a series of objects produced for the Louvre Museum exhibition L’Olympisme, on the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
