Red-figure kypellon with seated Eros, Classical Period, ca. 450–430 BCE.
Compact and beautifully proportioned, this squat mug (kypellon) carries one of antiquity's most powerful images: Eros, winged and at rest, seated with the easy composure of a god between errands.
The kypellon form, low, wide-bellied, with a flared rim and small loop handle, was a vessel of the household, intimate in scale and handled daily. Here it becomes a vehicle for some of the finest craftsmanship of the Classical period, the figure drawn with the fluid confidence that defines Attic red-figure at its peak.
