Melian-inspired kernos

This one-of-a-kind kernos is inspired by the prehistoric multiple vessels of Melos. It combines elements from two Early Bronze Age examples found on the island: a kernos of the Phylakopi I culture in the British Museum (ca. 2300–2000 BCE) and a kernos from a tomb on Melos, now in the Louvre (Sèvres 3552, ca. 2000 BCE). It brings these ancient forms together in a new composition.

A central vessel with a dark rim is surrounded by eight small cups, each linked to it by a short bridge and raised on arched supports above a flaring, openwork foot. Each cup carries its own painted panel in black and terracotta on a pale matt ground, with crosshatching, chevrons or triangle lattices filled with fine hatching, while horizontal bands circle the foot.

Handcrafted at the THETIS workshop, it can be enjoyed as a sculptural centrepiece, a decorative vessel or a candleholder for several candles.
