Worn over the thigh while preparing wool for spinning and weaving, its roughened upper surface helped work the fibres. Closely associated with women’s work and the ideal of the accomplished wife, elaborately decorated epinetra also became connected with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003emarriage and the transition from maidenhood to married life\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"Paragraph-kKnbIo\" dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis exceptional example reproduces a red-figure epinetron attributed to the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong class=\"font-semibold\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEretria Painter\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. Its miniature decoration unfolds across the curved surface in two richly populated scenes. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong class=\"font-semibold\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlcestis and her companions\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e appear on one side, while the other brings together \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong class=\"font-semibold\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAphrodite, Eros, Harmonia, Peitho, Kore, Hebe and Himeros\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e — divinities and personifications associated with love, persuasion, harmony, youth and desire. The remarkably fine lines and details are best revealed under close observation and appropriate lighting. At the closed end, which covered the knee, the vessel terminates in a modelled female bust.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"Paragraph-kKnbIo\" dir=\"auto\"\u003eThis one-of-a-kind piece was created at \u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003eTHETIS between 2018 and 2020\u003c\/span\u003e, spanning the period before and during the pandemic. After the body was formed on the potter’s wheel, \u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003eAngeliki Dervenioti\u003c\/span\u003e modelled the female bust and created the scale-like reliefs (\u003cem\u003eφολίδες\u003c\/em\u003e) of the upper surface. \u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003eVicky Xyda Ralli\u003c\/span\u003e, our then master vase painter, transferred the complex compositions and began the painting. The decoration was subsequently extensively revised and completed by \u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003ePopi Mitsopoulou\u003c\/span\u003e, an archaeologist and a new vase painter at THETIS since Sept 2020, with the guidance of \u003cspan class=\"font-semibold\"\u003eEleni Aloupi\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"Paragraph-kKnbIo\" dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe two sides preserve traces of this process: the lines of the Alcestis scene are at times more hesitant, while the side with Aphrodite is noticeably more confident and decisive.
